Geography Research Assistant

Thursday, December 14, 2006

Today i spent sometime helping Jeni with some research she was doing. She had found some articles for me and then I reviewed some of the work she had found. It was nice to see what she had been up to and that we could work a bit together. Sometimes I go through co-worker withdrawals.

Another Day

Okay well I am still working on this paper over 17 pages. Umm I am trying to draw conclusions between the areas requiring further research and the findings presented in my paper. This is seeming to be a difficult task because I found areas that needed further research that related to other geographic subdisciplines like economic or population geography and I wasn't sure how to bring that up in the paper. So now I am trying to make those connections.

Today, I am still writing my paper 16 total pages -- I have to admit it is a bit of a beast!! hahaha. but I am learning loads while doing it. I am not sure what the total will be when I am done but I assume I will probably cut somethings out when I finally finish. Right now I am just trying to get a rough draft, and believe me it is pretty rough. Anyway that is all for today. I need to also go to the library and recheck out Keith Smith textbook on natural hazards -- they wouldn't let me check it out again. Well that is it.

I got two Natural Hazard textbooks and spent the whole time going through them. Both had good introductory chapters that helped me gain a greater understanding of Natural Hazard research. I also went through the bibliographies and looked at the references. Then I took the initiative to start researching about migration and natural hazards. I found some great articles. I am wondering if there will statistical information concerning migration after natural hazards -- that is what I am looking for. I would like to research the affects of natural hazards on migration and if people are more likely to migrate to other hazardous areas.

Back to work. Well I haven't worked this week yet till today because Dr. Otterstrom asked me to grade some papers for him. So I spent time getting that done. However I am planning on putting in at least 13 to 15 hours this week. I am working on my paper still. I have 13 pages. Not too bad. I am also constructing a timeline of all the research done so it is easy to see where the field has come from and where it is going. I think that is about it.

I got really sick yesterday -- and although I still am not feeling 100% I am working today! I am still working on the paper -- I have left a lot of loose ends with some of the sections that I am going to try and fix up today.
